Free Knitting Pattern - Basic Chunky Knit Hat
At one time or another most of us need a quick and easy knit, perhaps as a last-minute gift or to replace a favourite accessory that's been lost or misplaced. Enter the basic beanie hat, and even better yet, enter the chunky basic beanie hat. Now, a basic beanie hat pattern is easy to come by -- there are dozens, if not hundreds, of free patterns available. That being said, I don't think there can ever be too many free patterns, so today I'm going to share with you my take on the Basic Beanie Hat, and it really is quite simple. As you can see from the photos, I like to add a big, playful pom pom to my beanie. Even with the pom pom you can make this hat with about 80 grams of chunky yarn, (of course even less without the pom pom). For the hats shown here I've used Berroco Ultra Alpaca Chunky, which is warm and soft and comes in a lovely palette of colours.
What you will need: About 80 grams of chunky yarn US7/4.5mm 16 inch circular needles US10/6mm 16 inch circular needles US10/6mm set of dpns Tapestry needle to weave in ends Optional: Pom Pom maker
With US7/4.5mm needles CO 78.
Ribbing: k1, p1 for 7 rounds
Increase Round: k7, m1l, (k13, m1l)x5, k6
Switch to US10/6mm and continue in stockinette stitch, (knit every round), until hat measures 6.5 inches from cast on edge.
Decrease Rounds (switch to dpns when necessary) 1st round: k2tog to end of round Next 2 Rounds: Knit all stitches Next Round: k2 tog to end of round Cut your yarn, leaving a tail of about 6 inches; weave tail through remaining stitches and pull up tight. Weave in all ends. Make and attach pom pom. And that's it! In about the time it takes to watch a movie or two you will have a gorgeous hat to gift or wear.
